On a prominent plot along the Amsterdam Rijnkanaal, a courtyard housing block has been designed to reflect the rich collection of Art Deco architecture in Utrecht. This robust and geometric style is characterised by its stately presence and refined and patterned brickwork facades. For the enrichment of the facade compositions, inspiration was drawn from various iconic Utrecht buildings from the Art Deco period. The characteristics of this style have been abstracted and translated into a contemporary appearance and construction method. The geometric and rationalistic properties of the Art Deco style are suitable for the development of a modern and abstract architecture. Architecture for this new part of Utrecht, with a reference to the past.
